I haven't read it in a long time (I also have, at times, certain reservations about McCarthy's overtly masculine, stoic prose, although here I think it works), but in the second excerpt I would argue that the repetition of the word gray is a stylistic choice. ![]() I don't much care for the term 'world building' - I don't even know what that means, other than how it applies to fantasy fiction (something which doesn't interest me). The countryside he built is repetitive, and it is eerie because of that. I don't care to tell other people how they should/shouldn't interpret something, but I would say you're reading it as though it should be a different type of book.
